Understanding Casino Bonuses and Promotions

A plain-English guide to casino bonus types, wagering requirements and the fine print that decides real value. 18+, T&Cs apply.

A bonus is only as good as its terms. The percentage in the headline tells you almost nothing on its own; the wagering requirement, the game weighting and the withdrawal cap decide whether an offer is worth your time. This guide, written by Elena Marsh, a senior iGaming analyst with nine years spent reading bonus terms, explains how to judge a promotion on its mechanics rather than its marketing.

Common bonus types

Most promotions fall into a handful of recognisable shapes. Knowing which one you are looking at is the first step to reading it correctly.

  • Welcome / match bonus — the operator matches a share of your deposit with bonus funds (a “100% match” doubles your deposit balance, for example). It is the most common first-deposit offer.
  • Free spins — a fixed number of spins on a named slot, often tied to a deposit. Any winnings usually convert to bonus funds subject to wagering.
  • No-deposit bonus — a small amount of bonus cash or spins granted without a deposit. These carry the strictest terms, typically high wagering and a low maximum cashout.
  • Reload / cashback — a reload matches a later deposit; cashback returns a percentage of net losses over a set period. Cashback is sometimes paid as real cash, which changes its value considerably.

Wagering requirements (the key number)

Wagering, also called playthrough, is how many times you must bet the bonus before the balance becomes withdrawable. It is expressed as a multiplier such as 30x or 40x.

Here is a clearly labelled illustrative example — always read the specific offer, because your bonus may differ:

Illustrative only. A €50 bonus with 35x wagering requires 50 × 35 = €1,750 in qualifying bets before you can cash out. On a slot returning around 96%, that turnover carries a meaningful expected cost, which is why bonuses are entertainment, not a way to make money.

Also check what the multiplier applies to:

  • Bonus-only wagering multiplies the bonus amount alone (35x on €50 = €1,750).
  • Deposit + bonus wagering multiplies both together (35x on a €50 deposit plus €50 bonus = €3,500). The same “35x” is nearly double the work.

These figures are illustrative. For any real promotion, T&Cs apply and you should verify the exact multiplier and basis on the operator’s site.

Terms that change an offer’s value

The wagering multiplier is rarely the whole story. Several clauses quietly decide how achievable it is.

  • Game weighting — slots usually count 100% towards wagering, while table games and live casino often count 10% or less, or are excluded. A slot-friendly offer can be near useless if you prefer roulette.
  • Max bet while wagering — a cap (commonly a few euros per spin) that voids the bonus if breached. Easy to trip accidentally.
  • Time limit — bonuses expire, often within days. A high multiplier on a short clock may be impossible to clear responsibly.
  • Maximum cashout — a ceiling on what you can withdraw from bonus winnings, which matters most on no-deposit offers.
  • Eligible / excluded games — the fine print names where the bonus can and cannot be used. High-volatility titles like Gates of Olympus (Pragmatic Play) are sometimes restricted or weighted differently.

How to judge a promotion

Work through the terms in order rather than reacting to the headline. Read the multiplier and confirm whether it applies to bonus-only or deposit plus bonus. Check the game weighting against the games you actually play. Note the time limit and the maximum bet, then look for a maximum cashout. A modest 50% match with 25x bonus-only wagering and full slot weighting can easily beat a flashy 200% match with 50x on deposit plus bonus and heavy exclusions.

If a term is missing or unclear, treat that as a reason for caution, not optimism. The best habit is to open the full terms and read them before you opt in.
